Since 2017, Everybody Eats Charitable Trust has been on a mission to tackle food waste, food poverty, and social isolation in New Zealand. Their pay-as-you-feel dining concept takes food that would otherwise go to waste and transforms it into nutritious, restaurant-quality meals.
By offering a dignified dining experience where customers can pay whatever they can afford, Everybody Eats creates a space where people from all walks of life come together to share a meal.
We spoke with Maddy Shieff, Marketing and Fundrasing Manager at Everybody Eats, about what drives their incredible work.
“We believe everyone deserves access to a great meal, regardless of their circumstances.”
Everybody Eats supports some of Auckland’s most vulnerable communities, including the homeless, elderly, single parents, children, and those facing mental health or substance abuse challenges.
“We’re not just feeding people; we’re bringing them together. It’s about creating connections and breaking down social barriers,” Shieff explains.
The organisation has made a significant impact, diverting over 80 tonnes of food from landfills, serving more than 95,000 meals, and engaging over 4,500 volunteers.
After receiving a SilverChef Community Grant valued at $5,000 NZD, Everybody Eats was able to purchase key kitchen equipment for their new Glen Innes restaurant, which has helped them expand their services and feed more people.
“The grant made a huge difference for us. It allowed us to set up our new space in Glen Innes to meet the growing demand, as well as keeping our Auckland space open five nights a week and our Wellington site three nights a week.” Shieff reflects.
The funds also contributed to ingredient costs, enabling the organisation to continue providing high-quality meals to their diners.
With this support, Everybody Eats has grown its mission, tackling food waste and food poverty while building inclusive, connected communities – one meal at a time.
