Kaibosh Food Rescue - Community Grant

Kaibosh Food Rescue, Aotearoa’s first dedicated food rescue organisation, has spent over 15 years working towards a bold vision: Zero Food Poverty, Zero Food Waste. Operating across the Greater Wellington Region, Kaibosh rescues surplus food from the food industry and redistributes it to community groups and charities that support those in need.

In the past year alone, they saved 760,337 kilograms of food from being wasted, providing essential nutrition to individuals and families facing food insecurity.

“We are the link between the food industry and groups in our community supporting those in need,” explains Susie Robertson, Chief Executive of Kaibosh

Kaibosh partners with more than 140 charities to ensure that good, nutritious food reaches the most vulnerable. The organisation’s focus extends beyond food rescue, they are also committed to sustainability and reducing food waste at all levels.

“The amount of food we are collecting remains constant, but the demand is increasing,” says Susie.

To meet this growing need, Kaibosh launched the Kaibosh Kitchen, Pito-one, a project designed to turn surplus food into ready-to-eat meals. By doing so, they reduce food waste while increasing the amount of food available for redistribution.

A SilverChef Community Grant to the value of $5,000 AUD has helped Kaibosh equip their kitchen with the right tools to save and deliver more food to those who need it most.

“The grant enabled us to buy near-new kitchen equipment to get the kitchen up and running,” Susie says.

Now operating three days a week, the kitchen produces hundreds of meals, turning what would have been waste into nourishment for the community.

Looking ahead, Kaibosh aims to expand their kitchen’s operations to further increase their impact.
