CASE STUDY
The Tin Hut, Tauherenikau

An hour north of Wellington, on State Highway 2, between Featherston and Greytown is Tauherenikau. This small settlement is famous for two things: the racecourse and the iconic Tin Hut Restaurant and Bar. The latter took a short business hiatus in December 2015 but locals breathed a sigh of relief when new publican, Kate Sullivan, took over the reins and re-opened its doors in June.

“I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to be part of this community” says Kate. “I was looking for another challenge and although new to hospitality I have a great team around me and The Tin Hut is the perfect place to be!”

I would never have been able to do this if not for Silver Chef!

Kate is from a farming background and grew up in the Wairarapa area. “When I took over I refurbished everything, including a new kitchen. The capital outlay was huge and to be totally honest, I would never have been able to do this if not for Silver Chef, who provided a rent-to-buy contract for the kitchen equipment. They are fantastic. I applied, they said we can help you and, zoom, it was done. It’s really affordable for someone starting out and I can actually revisit the contract at the end of the year.”

Kate describes the menu as “not fine dining but good country fare”. The Tin Hut serves a great mix of meals from the popular Tin Hut Burger to Thai green chicken curry, scotch fillet, beer-battered fish and chips, and a Sunday roast. Visitors can also relax in the Garden Bar and enjoy a drink and a stroll around the two-acre garden.

“I don’t know why I love hospitality but I do. I guess just seeing people come and enjoy good food and the experience. But we wouldn’t be able to cook good food if we didn’t have good equipment, so THANK YOU Silver Chef!
